Feeling Distant from God? Practical Steps to Reignite Your Faith

Hey friend!

Have you ever gone through a season where God feels… far away? Maybe life has thrown so much at you that you feel overwhelmed, or perhaps you’ve just been coasting and realize, “Wait, where did my closeness with God go?”

First of all, know this: feeling distant from God happens to everyone. Really, everyone! Even the most devout people in the Bible faced seasons of doubt, distraction, and distance. But the beautiful thing is that God is always there, patiently waiting, ready to welcome us back with open arms.

So... if you’re feeling a bit disconnected (believe me: I hear you!), let’s talk about some practical, simple steps to help you reignite your faith and rekindle that closeness with God.

1. START WITH HONEST PRAYER

You don’t need fancy words or a rehearsed script, SERIOUSLY. Just be real with God! Tell Him how you feel—even if that means saying, “God, I feel so far from you, and I don’t know how to get back.”

Honest prayers are powerful because they break down the walls we sometimes build up. God already knows your heart, and inviting Him into your struggles can be the first step toward connection.

Scripture to Inspire: “The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” — Psalm 145:18

2. GO BACK TO THE WORD

I know, I know… sometimes reading the Bible can feel daunting, especially if you’re out of the habit. But the Bible is like a love letter waiting for you to open it. Start small! Pick one verse or one chapter, like Psalm 23 or John 15, and meditate on it. Let God speak to you through His Word—it’s His way of staying close to us.

Tip: Try using a highlighter to color-code verses that resonate with you. (We’ve got some amazing Bible highlighters at Spark of Faith if you need a little splash of color to make studying fun!)

3. GET INTO A ROUTINE (BUT KEEP IT SIMPLE)

Sometimes, we overcomplicate things (I'm guilty here!!) A routine with God doesn’t have to be an hour-long Bible study every day. Start with just 10 minutes in the morning or before bed. Maybe read a short devotional, whisper a quick prayer, or listen to a worship song. Consistency is more important than length; God cherishes every moment you set aside for Him.

4. LISTEN TO WORSHIP SONGS

There’s something about worship music that reaches into our souls, right? When words fail, music can often capture the heart of our prayers. Put on some worship music while you’re cooking, driving, or even folding laundry. Let those songs become your prayers, lifting you closer to God even when life feels distant.

Spark Tip: Create a “Reconnect with God” playlist, with songs that remind you of His love and presence.

5. REFLECT ON YOUR "GOD MOMENT"

Sometimes we just need a little reminder of what God has already done in our lives. Think back to moments when you felt God’s presence, when He answered a prayer, or when He brought peace to a difficult situation. Write them down, and thank Him for those moments. Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past can help reignite our faith in the present.

Verse to Remember: “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.” — Psalm 77:11

6. SURROUND YOURSELF WITH FAITH-FILLED FRIENDS

God never meant for us to walk this journey alone. Find a friend, a family member, or even a local Bible study group to connect with. Share your struggles and your wins with them—they can pray with you, encourage you, and help you feel God’s presence in a tangible way. (I love my Bible study groups! Currently, I have 3 different ones, and I can't explain how much I had grown and learned!)

If you’re feeling isolated or unsure where to find that community, don’t worry. You could start with something simple, like joining an online group or even just texting a friend who shares your faith.

7. TAKE ONE STEP AT A TIME

Finally, remember that reconnecting with God isn’t a race or a box to check off. It’s a relationship. And just like any relationship, it takes time, patience, and grace. Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a day of prayer or struggle to read your Bible. God sees your heart, and He is so proud of every little step you take toward Him.

Encouraging Thought: God isn’t waiting for you at the finish line. He’s walking with you every step of the way!

Stay blessed and keep shining bright!
